Thailand Travel Guide

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Thailand is during the cool and dry season, which runs from November to early April. During this period, the weather is more pleasant with cooler temperatures and lower humidity, making it ideal for sightseeing, beach activities, and exploring the cities. The peak tourist season falls between December and February, so booking accommodations and tours in advance is recommended. The hot season (April to June) can be very warm, especially in inland areas, while the rainy season (July to October) sees frequent showers and higher humidity, particularly in the south and central regions. However, the rainy season can also be a good time to visit if you prefer fewer crowds and lush green landscapes.

What to expect

Language: The official language of Thailand is Thai. English is widely spoken in tourist areas, major cities, and among the younger population.

Currency: The official currency is the Thai Baht (THB).

Safety: Thailand is generally considered a safe destination for travelers. However, petty crimes such as pickpocketing and scams targeting tourists can occur, particularly in busy tourist areas. It’s important to stay vigilant, especially in crowded places. Be cautious of common scams, like those involving tuk-tuk drivers, gem shops, and tour operators. Political demonstrations can happen, so it’s wise to avoid large gatherings and stay updated on local news and travel advisories from your home country.

Cuisine: Thai cuisine is famous for its vibrant flavors, combining sweet, sour, salty, and spicy elements. Some must-try dishes include: Pad Thai: Stir-fried noodles with eggs, tofu, shrimp or chicken, peanuts, bean sprouts, and lime. Tom Yum Goong: A hot and sour soup with shrimp, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, galangal, and chili. Green Curry (Gaeng Keow Wan): A coconut milk-based curry with green curry paste, chicken, eggplant, and basil. Som Tum: Spicy green papaya salad with lime juice, fish sauce, peanuts, and chili. Massaman Curry: A rich, mildly spicy curry with meat (usually beef), potatoes, and peanuts. Mango Sticky Rice: A popular dessert made with sticky rice, fresh mango slices, and coconut milk. Khao Pad: Thai-style fried rice with various ingredients like vegetables, chicken, or shrimp.
