Ultimate Packing Guide for Travellers and Backpackers
Will you really need those things you think you need?
Absolutely not!
On my first trip abroad, I went to the Balkans and took with me the entire list of items recommended by my tour company to its customers. Like a porter, I carried a lot of things that I never used. A few months later, when I went on my first backpacking trip around the world, I again carried too much stuff and it was becoming a burden, I gave my belongings as a gift to the people I met in the hostels I visited (I asked if we could take a photo together in return).
But I am also aware that everyone has different travel styles and needs. No two travellers are alike.
As you prepare for your future travels, I wanted to give you a list of items that I think are versatile, practical and a must-have. These items won't take up too much space, will be extremely useful and will make your trip better.
Without further ado, here is my list of the best equipment for travellers:
Let’s be honest—packing for a trip can feel overwhelming. It’s so easy to overpack and stuff your suitcase with things you think you might need, only to realize later you didn’t touch half of it! I’ve been there, too. So, here’s a breakdown of what I personally take and what you’ll actually need, based on different types of trips.
Clothing: Less is More
It’s tempting to pack every outfit in your closet, but the key here is versatility. Stick to neutral colors that you can mix and match. For a weeklong trip, I usually pack:
5-6 T-shirts or casual tops
2 pairs of pants and shorts (depending on the weather)
1 lightweight jacket and sweater (even if it’s warm, the evenings can get chilly)
1 pair of comfortable shoes for walking(definitely a quality insoles)
1 pair of dress shoes or sandals (for fancier dinners or events)
Underwear and socks for each day, plus an extra set or two
1-2 dressy outfits (if I know I’ll be going out)
Toiletries: Keep It Simple
I’ve learned to minimize my toiletries to the absolute basics. A lot of hotels and rentals provide shampoo and soap, so I just take:
Toothbrush and toothpaste
Deodorant
Face wash or wipes
Sunscreen (always essential)
Moisturizer (because traveling can really dry out your skin)
Lip balm (especially for flights!)
If you’re a makeup lover, keep it minimal with BB cream, mascara, and lip gloss—light and easy.
Tech Gear: Only the Essentials
If you’re like me, tech is non-negotiable. But don’t overdo it! What I actually bring:
Phone (of course) and charger
Portable power bank (you’ll thank yourself on long days)
Headphones
Laptop (if I’m working remotely)
Camera (but only if I know I’ll be capturing memories)
Drone
E-Book reader
And don’t forget your adapters if you’re traveling internationally!
Documents: Keep Them Handy
You’ll need quick access to your important documents, so keep them in a travel wallet or pouch. Here’s my checklist:
Passport
Driver’s license or ID
Boarding passes and travel itinerary
Travel insurance details
Hotel confirmations
Any relevant tickets or reservations
Snacks & Water
When I’m on the go, I always pack a few snacks—like granola bars or trail mix—and a reusable water bottle. It saves money and keeps you fueled for your adventures!
Extras for Comfort
Long flights or bus rides can be exhausting. I like to bring:
A neck pillow
Eye mask and earplugs (for those long-haul flights)
Hand sanitizer and wet wipes (you never know when you’ll need these!)
Medications & First Aid
Don’t forget your prescription meds, but I also carry a few essentials like:
Pain relievers
Motion sickness pills
Band-aids
Antihistamines (if you have allergies)
